hero of the day

hero of the day : Jack Layton

herojack

my hero of the day this time is very difficult for me to put into words.  this week we here in canada lost not only a great politician (yes they do exist from time to time), but also a generally great man who truly loved our country and did everything he possibly could to make us the great nation he knows we can be. Jack Layton was a rare breed in the world of politics.  his love of canada and the people in it has been very well documented.  you can find numerous stories of his passionate support of environmental issues, cyclists, the LGBT community and so on.  you know those bike posts...

hero of the day : ok go

okgo

the title should actually read 'hero of pretty much always' but then i'd have to create a new category and section for it and...well, i'm lazy.  today's hero : ok go! i've loved these guys since 2002-ish when a whopping 2 copies of their self-titled debut were shipped to the record store i worked at during that time.  i loved the cover and gave it a listen on my break.  by the end of my 15 minute break, i had purchased the cd and it still remains one of my favourite music purchases to date.  i also got in some crap by my boss because i put their cd on the stereo in the store, when we were...

Folks, it's a sad time in tv land.  tomorrow night will mark the last appearance of the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. i've been a long-time fan of the fire-haired host since the early days of Late Night (yep, i'm that old) and was thrilled to see that not only is Conan finally getting the show he rightfully deserves, but the Tonight Show would finally get back a good host who is smart, funny and respected by his peers.  not mention the fact that it spelled the end of Jay (i'm not funny) Leno...or so we all thought hoped. instead we have the stupidest of all network moves that sees jay return...

hero of the day : Scrubs

scrubs

today, my friends, is a sad day in tv land...and real life land for that matter. the season finale of Scrubs airs tonight on ABC and for most fans and critics alike, it's being seen as the series finale. (there are rumors of it being brought back and revamped with a new cast but even if so, it won't be the same) Scrubs, much like another favourite of mine Ed, has always been one of the best shows on tv. it always seems to find a perfect balance between comedy and drama week after week, even through all the time slots moves, cancellation threats and overall lackluster ratings. scrubs should...

creating documents.  it's not my favourite thing to do but every now and then i'm forced to create a training manual, flyer, brochure, etc. what really gets my goat is trying to make great looking pdf's while keeping the file size small.  it's been a constant headache of mine for quite some time now...until today! today i stumbled across an article by the good folks at hoboes.com showing how to compress the file size of pdfs while leaving the visual quality and clarity pretty much intact.  This solution only works on a Mac so for you PC users out there, too bad for you.  there's just...

GM : my hero of the day

gm-ren-cen

I just got this email from my mum and i had to share it with y'all. ------------------------- At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, 'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.' In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: For no reason whatsoever, your car would...
